about

Loretto Alfresco, one of several tape pieces created in my teens, was previously released in Electro-Acoustic Miniatures 2012: Re-Caged (SEAMUS). Recorded at the base of a tree in rural Wisconsin, this musique concrète miniature transforms Tom Loretto’s solo improvisations with an array of “found” percussion instruments (including the tree) into a high-speed, high-pitched duet with himself. Premiered during the inaugural New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (2009), it has been heard throughout the United States and at international festivals in Canada, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Music critic Allan Kozinn has written: “Loretto Alfresco is endearingly low-tech: its sounds are drawn entirely from recordings of a friend striking pots, pans, and other items, which Mr. Fleisher sped up . . . and overlaid to create a rich, tactile texture” (New York Times). The slightly faster/shorter Loretto Alfresco (piccolo), included in several “60x60” mixes premiered during the 2010 International Computer Music Conference (Electronic Music Foundation/NYC and Stony Brook University), has since been heard in Australia, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Taiwan, and at other locales in the U.S. – R.F.
