about

Sarabande: The saraband(e) has a complex history involving numerous cultures, languages, and influences: Is it Spanish or Persian in origin? Is its character stately or salacious? Is the second beat accented? Are the cadences “feminine?” Does its name derive from the zarabanda, a 16th-century Guatemalan flute? Traditional aspects of this popular 17th-century French dance-based genre observed here, as in Baroque-era instrumental suites, are its triple meter and third-movement placement, as in Baroque-era instrumental suites. Though largely dating from the 1970s, much of this movement recalls the harmony of still earlier 20th-century music, including solo piano compositions by Erik Satie and Claude Debussy bearing the same title.
