Reconstruction: Inspired by John Cage’s 1939 percussion ensemble composition, First Construction (in metal), this solo multi-percussion movement includes no direct quotes, but occupies the same framework: 16 sections (grouped 4-3-2-3-4), each of 16 measures similarly parsed, followed by a 9-measure (2-3-4) coda. Cage’s numerical palindrome is also applied here to still smaller levels of rhythmic organization, and to instrumentation: 4 glockenspiel pitches are heard in each of its two octaves, with 3 cowbells, 2 brake drums, 3 cymbals, and 4 tuned gongs. The glockenspiel and gongs share 32 statements, in eight permutations, of the pitches C, A, G, and E. Despite its continuous use of 4/4 meter throughout, this longest movement of the set presents even experienced percussionists with a variety of challenges.
