about

The Five Pieces for Flute and Percussion are dedicated to Stefanie Abderhalden and Kyle Flens, who premiered them at Northern Illinois University in 2016. Pairing the entire flute family from piccolo to contrabass flute with metallic percussion, three duos alternate here with solo movements for each performer. Combining more recently composed music with nods to earlier works, each movement recalls one of my Five Songs from Carl Sandburg’s “Prairie” (2004). The duos also include material composed in my teens, while the solo movements are indebted in different ways to music from other sources. – R.F.

Recollections: Melodic fragments introduced in the slow opening section of this first movement subsequently assume the form and quicker pace of music I composed decades earlier. A brief return to the opening tempo, texture, and character follows. Both the main theme and countermelody of the middle section assume more expansive roles in the final movement, Ensemble. One of the earliest flute and percussion duos is briefly recalled, and the central five-note chord from the third of Schoenberg’s Five Pieces for Orchestra makes its first of several appearances.
