about

Elegies: As in Recollections, the outer sections of this solo contrabass flute movement frame earlier material. Special effects including whistle tones, key clicks, and flutter tonguing are heard in the opening and closing sections, which also recall flute motives from a variety of works by several noted 20th-century composers. The lyrical middle section combines melodies from two traditional (19th-century) “dying soldier” songs: “Erin Far Away” and “Drummer Boy” appear in Helen Creighton’s Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia (1932), but likely originated in the British Isles. Erin is a traditionally female name that can also refer to Ireland. The principal three-note motive in the outer sections (E, F, A) is a melodic acronym for “Erin Far Away.” One of the newest and still least familiar (if increasingly utilized) members of the flute family, the contrabass flute requires considerably more breath support than its smaller, higher-pitched relatives.
