about

Orquesta de Cámara de Siero, OCAS
Héctor Cuello, bagpipe/gaita
Manuel Paz, director

NiFe (named for Nickel and Iron, the earth’s core elements) was composed in 1995 at the request of maestro Manuel Paz on the occasion of a tribute concert to the victims of an Asturian mining accident that left 33 miners dead. Since then it has been performed hundreds of times by the Siero Chamber Orchestra directed by Manuel Paz and also by the Simón Bolívar Orchestra of Caracas directed by Alfredo Rugeles, the Madrid Community Orchestra, and the Asturias Orchestra (OSPA). NiFe premiered in Langreo, Asturias with an orchestra of young students from the Conservatorio del Nalón conducted by Manuel Paz. NiFe has been widely performed including such countries as Indonesia, Latin America, Europe, and at the U.N. in New York.

Flores Chaviano, Spanish Cuban guitarist and composer, has lived in Spain since 1981. As performer he has premiered dozens of works for guitar and instrumental ensemble. Chaviano is founder and director of the Nuevo Ensemble de Segovia with which he carries out an intensive work of disseminating today’s music. His works have been widely performed in countries such as India, Zimbawe, Pretoria, Cape Town (South Africa), and Indonesia. His productions range from symphonic and chamber music to instrument solos, chorale and electro-acoustic music and diverse instrumental combinations.
