Rebonds, comprising two multi-percussion solo movements (A and B) composer Iannis Xenakis permitted to be performed in either order, was premiered by Sylvio Gualda at the Villa Medici in Rome. As Greg Beyer’s revealing analysis of the structural principles underpinning and animating this virtuosic work observes, the highly sectional movement B (largely alternating drums and woods) contrasts starkly with the “singular, river-like flow of rhythmic material” heard here in movement A—which also exhibits “ever-increasing complexity and density” and “a kind of rhythmic accelerando.” [“All is Number: Golden Section in Xenakis’ Rebonds,” Percussive Notes 48 (February 2005): 48-56.] Xenakis’ exclusive use of drums in Rebonds A well complements the variety of other percussion timbres heard in this album. – R.F.
