Inertia, commissioned and premiered by Malika Green and Katie (Wiegman) Burdett at Northern Illinois University in 2006, was inspired by a construction project on my house. There were many days when no one showed up to work, so the result was a brief flurry of activity for a day or two followed by days or weeks where nothing happened; then another flurry, then nothing again. To represent the frustrating intermittence of this project, I first composed an entire piece consisting of fast, active music and separately wrote much slower, more static music. I then cut up the fast/active music and sporadically inserted the slow/static passages. After several cycles alternating the two, the fast/active music seems to take over—only ultimately to give way again to the slow/static music. As I write this, the construction is almost complete. I’m told two weeks, at the most. – D.M.
